life work, self work

Your Future Self Knows

 August 17, 2020

The people who come to career coaching usually tell me "I don’t know what I want”. When I ask them “If everything was possible what would you do?” They almost always have at least one answer. People usually do know what they want. They just don’t believe it is possible for them. They don’t believe they are “good enough”. They don’t have the necessary training. They don’t know if they have the abilities. They don’t know if they can make money with it.

Now we moved from a place of “I don’t know what I want” to “I know what I want but I don’t know how to make it happen”. We can work with how.

This work can still be challenging when there are lots of doubts and uncertainties.

The thinking is contracted in this limited mindset of today where the person doesn’t see an image in front of them when they don’t see a physical reality.

That is bad management of our resources. We possess a mind that can think in abstract terms, that can create a vision, that can see the puzzle pieces coming together in their minds before they come together in real life.

We can implement the same wisdom in our lives. We can think of the future and bring it to today

One exercise that I suggest my coachees is “The Rocking Chair” exercise.

The Rocking Chair Exercise

Imagine you’re 90 years old, blissfully happy, healthy, and sitting in your rocking chair looking back over your ideal life.

  • Who are you as a person?
  • How did your life unfold in various areas such as Family, Friends, Love, Career, Health, and Home.
  • What did you do for Fun? What did you learn? What did you do in Service? What did you do for or in your Community?
  • What have you achieved? What are you proud of? What added meaning and fulfilment to your life?
  • What did you do that was truly amazing? Where did you surprise yourself and others?
  • What are you most proud of? What mistakes did you make that you can laugh about now?
  • What can you see and hear around you? What are you feeling? What shows you that you’re truly happy?

now time to reflect

After having done this exercise now look at your life. What is calling you? What are the steps to that 90 years old self?

What will you do first?

If you ask me who I am in one word, I say “Human”If I should do it with two words, I say “Loving Human”. If I am allowed to do it in three words, I say“Loving Creative Human”

I create words, emotions, connections, energy and spaces.

I do that through coaching, writing, speaking, podcasting and training.
