Work as a School

 July 4, 2020

By  Isil Uysal Calvelli

Work - if what you do is with people - can be a great school.

You can be the student to everyone you are working with.

What qualities do you see in your colleagues and your managers that you appreciate?

If you have had conflicts with them, it may be a little difficult to notice something you appreciate because your feelings will cover the reality.

But being conscious of how you feel, you can put that aside for a moment and really look at them to see their powers.

You will find at least one character trait that you admire in each person. If you look deep enough, you mind find some of these qualities to be the ones that annoy you the most.

This brings us to the second way you can be a student: noticing the parts of you that are reactive.

You are a person of your own. So are the others. You have your own hormones, your own bloodstream and organs. So do the others.

Nobody can enter your system and make it work in a way they want. It is totally yours and separated from everybody else.

So how come do people make you angry, annoyed, stressed, sad......?

They don't. You do.

What they do reminds you a place that is sensitive in you.
The place which needs your attention and nurturing.

Without other people's "annoying", "saddening", stressing acts you would not be aware of that place and even if you were, you would not take the time to work with it while it is dormant.

Now you will.

The others teach you about you.

They don't only teach you about where in you needs your attention, they also show you who you are.

They show you parts of you that you did not know about.

They might notice things you are really good at and tell it to you. You probably have always thought that was nothing special.

They tell you where you could work a little bit more. You might learn that you come across differently then you actually intend to. They might share with you their sensitivity that you did no know about.

They help you to be a fuller version of yourself.

If you want, work can be a place where you learn kindness.
You learn it through practicing it.

You can look at the people at work in the eye, see who they are. You can tell them what you appreciate in them, ask how they are, bring them little gifts, ask them if they wanted to talk.

You can practice kindness in many ways.

Your work can be a school for you to be more yourself, kind, unique, loving person that you are.
